You’re right. The “utility” turned out to be simple:

 

dd bs=1 if=/dev/mtd/2 of=ftmp skip=262144 len=1441792

 

That dumped the kernel from flash to a file called ftmp. I fpted ftmp to my PC.

After I got it on the PC I dumped the first few hundred bytes and it matched what I get in redboot when I load vmlinux so I think I got the right bits.
It won’t boot. Next step is to checksum everything but I ran out of time last night.

Can't you just boot linux from flash or CF, and ftp the kernel image
somewhere? At worst you may have to mount a partition ... Maybe
I'm missing something, but I don't see a need for such a utility.
