Yes, that compiler is rather archaic now. Hopefully with the prospect 
of TS moving to a 2.6 they will also be moving the more recent Debian 
stable 4.0 . Debian is reknown for favouring tried and tested but 
some of this software is looking more like tired and torn now.

You could try installing a 3.3.x version or setting up a cross-
compiler using a more recent release.
