the flash controler automaitcally balances the write cycles to special memory
pages. if you use a application which are permanently write to the flash can
this be cause of having lower space in the flash available from time to time.
on the flash chip on the top you can see the exact product type and can
contact samsung semiconductor for a datasheet and lifetime. in my case i
would like suggest use the sdcard for heavy writing procedures. but take
notice reading from flash is no problem, the flashs writing is only the
issue.

think that is kernel 2.4 related... iam not sure at the moment if the
automount thing is in 2.4 branch included.

with the right script in the flash i think then no problem, but iam not tested
it.
