I have used RTAI on several different platforms. I have found you can run very solid real time interrupts down to approx. 3 msecs. You can go lower, of course, but it get's kind of jittery. The practical limit I've benchmarked is about 250 microseconds (i.e. at a 250 usec interrupt the real time program starves linux). All these were rather sloppy tests, using LXRT rather than kernel mode. I have been told that the jitter is more because of the kernel version -- RTAI in a 2.6 kernel is better. I have never really confirmed this myself, and it may just be urban myth. I also have heard there are things you can do when compiling the kernel to make it a little better. I have never pursued these either. In comparison, I have never benchmarked several real time OS's on similar processors -- stuff that cost up to $15K-$20K a seat -- that worked the same or even worse. I've used a custom socket interface, serial, and the embedded web page all in conjunction with the real time. wrote on 07/03/2007 07:34:27 AM: > Hi all, > > I'm thinking about making some tests with RTAI and TS-7250 to use this > board in even more projects, but I'd like to hear from people who yet > work with this real-time systems how it performs. > > What's the minimum interrupt period, 1ms? > Do anyone have values about jitter or latency? > > When working with the RT kernel can I use serial, ethernet and usb > ports or are there some kind of limitations? > > Thanks in advance, > Marco > > > > > Yahoo!
