If you can't (re)compile your kernel, try the user-space tool
mtd-debug to dump the feature set (part of the mtd-utils package).
There is a precompiled arm version around somewhere ...

Can you set up a NFS-root boot? Then you could mount /dev/mtdblock1
and take a copy of your root fs. Once copied, you could re-write
(format) the partion if possible.

You don't need to write the default boot parameters into the onboard
flash; you can still specify an NFS boot at the command line.
