Thanks Brian for the tip.
I did a web search and found that the command 'hwclock --systohc'
(http://linux.about.com/library/cmd/blcmdl8_hwclock.htm) synchonizes
the RTC to the system clock. I tried it and sure enough it worked. I
suppose this just shows that I am new to linux, but learning more
every day. Now I will add this into my application code so that any
changes made to the system clock are made permanent.
