OK, thanks Eddie.

One more question, though:

I've extracted the initrd from the sd card.  Now I want to mount it as
a loop device so I can examine it.

Trying to mount the dd'd image with -o,loop -t ramdisk results in a
successfull but empty mount.  gzip says the resulting image is not in
gzip format.

So...  How do I extract the files currently in the initrd?
