If you indeed want a module with which to fabricate your own
receiver I've seen some interesting suggestions float by.

However if you are looking for a weather resistant GPS puck
(receiver + antenna) I've picked up this a few weeks ago
for $64:

It is a 5V NMEA serial protocol device.  There is also a USB
version of this receiver which speaks a Garmin proprietary
protocol however it is documented and there is existing GPL
support.
