I use RTAI on several different platforms. You can develop in either kernel or user space (LXRT usually refers to user space programs... it is an acronym for LinuX Real Time). The ADEOS/RTAI patch adds the real time extension/API to linux. I have found you can run very "solid" real time interrupts down to about 3 milliseconds. You can go lower, but it get's kind of jittery. The "practical" limit I've benchmarked is about 250 microseconds. I have been told (never confirmed myself) that this is mainly a constraint of using a 2.4x kernel. These are all in user space.
