What he said...  Also, keep in mind that wifi is stamped out by the
millions, and thus you can get a very powerful wifi + computer (think
access point - 200MHz mips computer, with up to 8MB flash and 32 MB
RAM) for 1/4 of the price of a TS7200.... 

No other communications technology has that economy of scale right now.

We've used serial radios and looked at ethernet radios, but a single
cheap radio will break your budget - and a pair of good radios +
antennas will top $4K.
