To follow up, the SD card was not mounted sync for the benchmarks where 
we found 1.5MB/s write speeds on an SD card. Through empirical testing we've 
found only approximately 8 writes (of any size) per second can be performed on
an SD card. As a result if you are not writing contiguous data or if your SD 
card is mounted sync your write speeds will be less than the reported 1.5MB/s.
