ISTR that this 'overcommit malloc' was first introduced by IBM with
AIX (???) back in maybe 1986. It created quite a firestorm among the
pundits about the horrible programming practices it would engender -
programmers would get sloppy with memory management with disastrous
results, and how dangerous it was and how IBM should go back to the
original tried and true way of only malloc'ing physical memory....
Now I learn that linux uses that same 'horrible' method... :-)
(1986 was in the pre-Google days, so I can't find any references to
this....)
