Thanks to everyone who replied!

Microcom is exactly what I was after, but I also succeeded in building Ncurses 
and therafter 
getting Minicom to compile.

Just in case anyone hits the same problem, there is a change you need to make 
in port.h to 
get Minicom to compile using Ncurses:  Change #ifdef HAVE_TERMCAP to #ifdef 
HAVE_NCURSES_TERMCAP.
