The problem is Redboot cannot load a kernel direct from USB. The
distributed kenrel uses modules so a loaded kernel cannot speak to USB
until it's loaded the usb modules - from the USB ????? you see the
problem. You can overcome these problems by loading a kenrel from
onboard flash, along with an initrd image containing the necessary
modules and initialising code, which then pivotroot's to, say, a root
partition on the usb flash/disk.
Also remember the USB maybe USB2 but it's only at 12Mbits per/sec - so
don't expect any sort of performance.
