My workaround was simple:  I changed my kernel config so it compiled
everything I needed into the kernel executable instead of using loadable
modules.

Loadable modules are a great idea if you want a single CD that you
hope can run on any PC in the world, but I don't see much benefit in an
embedded system where you know in advance what the hardware configuration
is and what OS services the application uses.
