This is starting to drift off charter, but the RF module is only a small
part design space. The ZigBee spec is not mature, interoperability is a
major problem.

The Ember Em260 RF module is also attractive, about $10.40 quantity one
from Digikey

It talks SPI, which to me is a ton better than talking ancient serial
protocols.

There are at least two other competing higher level protocols building
on the same IEEE 802.15.4 Low Power Wireless Sensor Networks lower level
specs. Nokia just announced their own protocol.
