Do I really need a TS-9441 in order to use a TS-7400? I'm hoping to
use a TS-7400 as a central controller for my home automation system,
and the TS-9441 nearly doubles the cost of the TS-7400.
It looks like the TS-9441 does the TTL->RS-232 level conversions for
the console, but I can wire up a MAX3221 to do that for a few dollars.
Other TS-9441 functions seem to include JTAG connections (which I
don't think I'll need) and recovery to the default setup if you mess
up a modification to the flash boot process. But I'm pretty sure I'll
just set it up to boot from Debian on the SD card, which looks pretty
simple to do,and not mess with the flash stuff again.
So if I don't need JTAG, and manage to type "ln -sf /linuxrc-sdroot
/linuxrc; save" once, and can wire up a MAX3221 to provide a console,
do I need a TS-9441?
I can see the value for someone designing a commercial product, an
extra $125 would be insignificant, but for someone using just one, it
seems like a lot.
Thanks,
Keith Hearn
