Neil,

You have to setup the cross-compiler tools first, http://www.seiner.com/ts7000/index.php/CrossCompileTools then I'd suggest writing a simple helloworld.c program and download it and run it.

Once you have that done that work on recompiling the kernel with the above mentioned CrossCompileTools and make sure that works. Once you have your kernel working try compiling one of your device drivers, (modules in the linux world)
