As with everything, it depends on what you're doing...
I wrote my own graphic/font/line/circle/box/etc routines for my
application, and I find it much easier to program rather than trying
to get into the head of the person/group who created X11/GTK.
I have multiple screen pages with anti-aliased fonts displayed on a
10.4" touch monitor. So far everything is working very nicely, and
the screen redraw speed is excellent due to the lack of system
overhead.
At some time when I have time I'm planning on releasing some of my
routines in the files section of this message group.
