In theory, if the kernel was overwritten during uncompressing, it may oops/panic at any random moment while it's running, but it usually does so while it's booting the kernel (i.e. before executing userland.) It also depends on which options you've compiled the kernel with, so for example it might disappear when turning a certain driver on or off in the kernel config. It's easy to recognise by the fact that the instruction pointer does point into the regular kernel area, but the hexadecimal instruction dump (Code:) looks like garbage (i.e. not like ARM instructions.) --L Yahoo!
