Better advertised realtime support in 2.6 sounds great, but even with
all of 2.6's improvements, RTAI still has much better response time
and runs on 2.4. Also, an RTAI application has the added advantage of
running in supervisor mode with access to various kernel functions and
data structures, hardware interrupts, etc...

I've been told there is yet to be a stable ARM platform running RTAI
on 2.6, so in this case using 2.4 turned out to be an advantage.
