Hi Jim,

Thanks for the reply. I've discovered the problem was the ISP 
prompting for a username. The username login prompt echoes back all 
characters including the PPP packets transmitted by the board. 

To correct the problem I adjusted the chat script to include the 
username and password.

I have two additional questions for everyone:

1. Is there a why to make the insmod of shlcslhc.o, ppp_generic.o 
and ppp_async.o permanent.

2. Is there a why of removing the default route from the routing 
table at startup. Because there is already a default route present 
(eth0), the defaultroute option in pppd cannot take effect.
