Can you try to launch xawtv -noxv  (or disable any accelerated features). On
my laptop and the lastest xawtv, i've a black screen if xv is set ... i don't
known why.
Try another program like mplayer or the small tool (capture.c and libpwc) to
grab an image. Use motion too for example. Check if the lastest pwc kernel
module is loaded (dmesg | grep pwc).

For gnomemeeting, i'm currently investigating the problem with v4l2 (but v4l
works fine).
