Hi, PWC'ers. I've been frantically trying to get a computer set up for my
folks over the Holidays to replace an ancient and probably unsecurable MS
Windows box they were running directly on the network. =8-O
I've got them replacements for almost everything they used MS Windows for;
unfortunately, I have hit a series of problems with the last big issue,
getting them a webcam set up so they can see their grandson. (I have to
go back home in a day or so, where I won't have console access, and I hate
working on this stuff on a deadline.) The make-or-break issue for me is
getting gnomemeeting working.
Since I have to maintain this thing by ssh, I set them up with Debian
Sarge mostly 'cuz I trust Debian stable not to break things. Stability
until I visit again was the priority. I'm starting to wonder if that was
a bad idea....
Generally everything is stock Debian Sarge, I want to be as "boring" as
possible.
kernel: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-386
webcam: Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000
gnomemeeting: 1.2.1-1
xawtv: 3.94-1
camstream 0.26.3-7
I know the camera works because I've used it many times at home on a Sarge
machine, which is what truly puzzles me here--AFAIK about everything is
the same.
I originally tried the 2.6.8 in-kernel driver (Nemosoft's) just to see if
it would work. Camstream worked without complaints but xawtv and
gnomemeeting both failed to open the device. So I've tested a bunch of
the 10.0 series drivers, and 10.0.7a and 10.0.9 are a slight improvement:
both xawtv and gnomemeeting can open the device. Gnomemeeting clearly
gets some data because the picture changes if you wave your hand in front
of it, but the picture is completely borked: the picture consisted of
colored horizontal lines until I messed with the controls, now it's green
horizontal lines. xawtv just displays a solid blue screen.
I really hate to ask for quick suggestions, but I'm running out of time
and haven't found an answer yet on the web. I am not sure where the
problem lays and if I should try building a newer kernel (that would take
a while on this old PII), building gnomemeeting from source, or looking
for errors in the V4L layer (would make sense since neither xawtv nor
Gnomemeeting work, but I've already gotten it so v4l-conf doesn't complain
about anything except lack of overlay support and I'm guessing that isn't
important).
I've attached some possibly useful info below. Thanks very much for any
suggestions.
Dustin
