That wasn't exactly right, but your suggestion led me to do a search, 
and I finally examined /etc/modprobe.conf, which had a line "options pwc 
index=1", which mysteriously appeared in that file since I installed FC4 
two weeks ago.
So ... thank you very much! My camera is up and running once again.
