About humidity, we have many different biomas here in Brazil and some of th=
em, such as the rainforest and the tropical forest, are really too humid fo=
r a Neumann. Once I tried the Amazon forest with a KM 185, and all I got wa=
s sounds that seemed to come from outer space, with all those clicks and po=
ps. I could manage to put the microphone in front of a hot lamp for some ho=
urs, than the problem was gone and just came back after a few minutes. The =
Sennheisers, on the other hand, stood still and could make it through the d=
amp. The Sanken CMS-7s also seems to bee resistant to the humidity. My goal=
with the USM 69 is to record some quiet soundscapes in the center of Brazi=
l, where I live. It's a very dry region most of the year, with lots of rive=
rs but very low air humidity, so I guess I will not have problems with that=

I was just wondering how the stereo image on a large diaphragm microphone w=
ould sound outdoors. I mean, I have recorded many musical instruments and v=
ocalists with LDCs, but for field recording we almost always use small diap=
hragms, right? I read somewhere around the internet that a microphone like =
USM 69 is suited for music, while the RSM 191 is better for field recording=
.. But if we think about nature as an orchestra, I guess we can record it a=
s music.=A0

In my time at National Public Radio in the US I know we used an SM69 for so=
me outdoor stereo documentary work, including Native American drum circles =
and rodeo ambiances, as well as a lot of indoor concert work. Some was done=
in XY stereo and some was done in Mid-Side.
In Brazil, I=92d want to know how humid the recording locations would be. T=
he Neumann may not fare very well in high humidity situations. I tried to d=
o recordings in lowland Bolivia, just across the border from western Brazil=
, with a Neumann RSM190, and it failed with lots of pops and clicks due to =
the humidity. But our Sennheiser MKH30, 40, and 50 mics handled those same =
conditions just fine.
