Yeah, given that I think I'll stick to single capsules per channel. I like the
polar pattern of the SASS, and don't want to muck it up.

Given everything everyone has said, here's my plan (for the moment, anyway):

Foam SASS with one EM-172 per side and one EM-258 capsule per side, each
brought out to its own XLR connector. I'm planning to record everything at
192kHz. The EM-172 will be used as-is, and the EM-258 will be frequency shifted
to bring the interesting bits into the audible range. (I'll have to see which
frequencies are dominant in each range to see where I want the bat calls to go.)

Off to start the CAD work!

 Thanks again, everyone.

 Tom

Electret capsules should not be wired to an XLR connector unless there’s 48V
phantom-to-PIP circuitry included. Otherwise the danger of accidentally
connecting to a powered mic input is too great. For PIP mics I suggest using
opposite-gender mini-XLRs, as is customary with wireless lavalier outfits. See
the wiring diagram for the Shure WL-183:

I wire mine to make use of the phantom power supplied by the recorder using the
SimpleP48 circuit designed by David McGriffy and documented by Ricardo Lee.
It's not as flexible as a full Schoeps CMC5 since you have to tune it to a
particular supply voltage, but it works remarkably well, considering how little
goes into it. The only real gotcha is that it works best on short cable runs.
On runs longer than about 10m the signals don't stay well balanced. Here's a
write-up I did a couple of years ago:

The same trick works for dual capsules wired in parallel, but you have to
re-tune the resistor value to get the right bias voltage across the capsule..

I'm planning to use a similar approach for the dual-band SASS.

I’ve always been curious about this idea of using high sample rates to record
sounds above 20kHz (such as calling frequency range for bats at above 40kHz).
When I record at 96kHz I see very little on the spectrogram above 20k, which is
what Sennheiser state as the upper frequency range of my mics. And most
condenser stats seem to say the same - an upper limit of 20kHz (I’m saying
limit, obviously it doesn’t just drop off to nothing at 20kHz but I’m just
referring to the manufacturers stats). I think those EM258 have a range of up
to 12kHz. Is this not the first limiting factor on recording bats using high
sample rate?

As I say always been curious about it but never tried it.

If you can get hold of a pair of Sennheiser 8020s they can detect (and record)
signals as high as 60kHz. and as low as 10Hz.

Not sure. Nick Roast implied the EM258 extends well above the numbers listed in
the datasheet, but I don't know what the upper end is.

One of the things that's limited testing for me is that I don't have a lot of
known ultrasonic sources to play with. I asked around earlier this week and may
have found a place to record the only species of bat on the island, so I might
have a better idea of the capsule's response from that, but I'd really like
something I can use in the lab, so to speak. It's hard to tweak things if the
only place I can test things is hours from the soldering iron.

Thanks for the pointer toward the 8020s, Bernie. I don't have access to them
here, but there's enough of a film industry in Austin I bet I can rent them
when I get there. I'll look into availability.

Does anybody know what happened to the Aves Vox iPhone app.

I get a message on the iPhone App Store that it isn't currently available.

Flock on!
