I was in Salatiga, Central Java, for the solar eclipse in 1983, and I was
really struck by the "shutdown" of the soundscapes, especially bird life,
just before and during the eclipse. As I recall it took them awhile to get
started again too. which i guess is to be expected since it basically
becomes nighttime, but it must really throw them off cycle! the human
soundscapes shut down also ... the shops closed, the streets were empty,
police and govt officials insisted that residents remain indoors, Windows
were shuttered, etc. several slit gongs (kulkul) and rice pounding blocks
(lesung) could be heard in the distance being rhythmically pounded ....
echo-like sounds.
