I purchased an adjustable 2-mike rail and couple of Beyer Dynamic light weight,
~4-5' high extended, highly portable, collapsible, which folds down for
transport and storage to about 18" x 4" x 4" package (see folded picture).
These have been stored in a closet for many years as I had no application. They
need a home where they can be or service.Beyer Dynamic Collapsible Portable

Traveling with gear, misc supplies

Hi all,
I have a field recording trip coming up. I think I have all the mics
and recorders I need, but now I am looking to get the little things to
round out the kit.

Things like:

-Pelican case or similar for traveling or flying with windshields etc
(Which Pelican size is best for flight)
-Backpack for carrying gear in the field
-Lighter tripods
-Battery chargers
-Orbit or similar mic stand attachments
-Grace or similar space bars for using different mic/windshielf combos
in the field.

Any suggestions appreciated, brand and model suggestions would be
really helpful.

Thanks in advance,<!--#yiv2990141741 #yiv2990141741ygrp-mkp {border:1px solid

Jason

Be aware that airlines, in my case Delta, will NOT cover
damage to electronic equipment of any sort in checked
luggage. Furthermore there is a limit to their liability
for lost luggage, which will not get near replacing
professional gear. I have unfortunate experience with the
damage issue, and have looked into it fairly carefully,
since I too have an upcoming trip. In fact, how to take
photographic and recording equipment has occupied more time
than anything else regarding these annual trips I take to
Arizona, and I start packing two weeks out. I even looked
into sending a case by UPS - $250, each way!

I already have 3 Pelican cases, a 1400 for my SD722, and two
1500s for camera equipment. I will be able to take only
1500, and that will be in a carry-on bag into which it will
barely fit- just for the convenience of wheels. The
recorder in a soft case, three microphones - in their
Softies, a camera body, two flash units and a 300mm lens
will all be in my back pack, making for a heavy load.
Clothes, shoes, camera supports all go in a checked duffle.
But, everything electronic will be with me. You may have
the additional problem of dealing with lithium batteries if
you use an SD7XX recorder. They must be in the cabin with
you- not checked. If it were not 1800 miles each way from
my home in faraway Bumpkinville, I would drive in a
heartbeat. And don't think paying up for first class will
help.

Finally, in my last fruitless conversation with Delta, they
admitted they have special arrangements worked out for media
companies to check equipment. If you can qualify for that
angle, give it a try.

Hello all,I am enjoying being part of this group and have found much of the
information and discussion intriguing and very helpful.I read this particular
post with interest.  I am new to "dedicated" field recording and have just
travelled to Greece overland by train. I wanted to bring an efficient set of
equipment for recording - mostly station and train atmospheres - on the way,
specific wild life and ambient sounds alongside some atmospheric soundscapes
once in Zagoria. I have one rucsac for everything so needed to keep bulk and
weight down. I found reading Christine Hass "Wild Mountain Echoes" and Vicki
Powys "capertreebirder.com" and all the links they provide really helpful.
My final items were:1 x Olympus LS 141 x Zoom H2n1 x Sennheiser ME66 with K6
power capsule with homemade shockmount blimp and wind gag2 x mini omnis based
on Primo EM 173 capsules with homemade windgags1 x pair of JrF contact mics1 x
JrF  hydrophone1 x pair of Sennheiser HD 25 headphones
My miscellaneous supplies:
   - XLR cable for shotgun

   - aux mic inputs on both recorders are mini 3.5mm so a range of adapters for
XLR/1/4"jack/3.5mm jack to 3.5mm female

   - small Gorilla tripod (would go for sligtly larger one in hindsight)

   - metal coat hanger adapted for spaced omnis

   - cheap telescopic selfie stick adapted as a mini boom pole (30cm - 120cm)

   - 3 bulldog clamp mic holders

   - 8 rechargable batteries and small charger

   - SD cards and memory sticks

   - 4 "drybags"

   - camouflage scrim

   - a couple of luggage rack stretchies, rubber bands and cable ties

   - 2 TB external hard disc with small laptop to transfer files (in hindsight
I would just bring more SD cards. The weight of the laptop and power cable has
almost doubled the total kit weight)

I packed all this into a freebie conference bag (despatch size) so the kit
didn't get lost amongst my clothes and other travelling gear and was easy to
get to quickly.
It's being fun doing this and the sounds up in these remote mountains are just
wonderful. I'm hoping I might get some frogspawn/tadpole activity at some time
and, later in the year some individual ciccada and cricket voices along with
the scops owl and some birds of prey.

All the best for your trip and I hope you get some great recordings and enjoy
being out in the wild...what a privilege.

last year I travelled from the UK to Florida on a family holiday, I took a
small roller suitcase with my telinga mic (plus cables, handle), Marantz 661
plus DSLR, 300mm len, 105mm macro and my binoculars. I rolled up the dish into
the Telinga bag and carried that separately. I had no problems on the flight
there or back.

Pelican cases work well enough but they are expensive and they are heavy and
bulky and with much equipment they are overkill. I prefer to use less expensive
and lighter cases whenever possible.

There are pistol cases made by Plano that have wave foam liners and these are
often the size I want for mics and similar items. APE cases (at B&H) are good
although the built in handle does not fold and so this adds to their overall
bulk without providing more inside space for gear.

A dead cat may be used over a foam "windscreen" but I find that the dead cat
alone is often sufficient and so no need to take the bulky foam piece, only the
fur that lays flat in the mic case.

Depending upon your rig there are advantages to being able to leave a given
setup pre-assembled and in a protective case, in particular for local use. When
traveling I can put a lot of gear in a case and then at my destination use the
case in the field while leaving much of my gear in the room so I can set up
everything in the room and then put it in the case which can then be tossed in
the back of the vehicle.

Thanks all for the helpful replies. Seems I've stumbled on a hot topic here :-)

Good points about the limited liability during flights. I'll be sure to carry
the most expensive pieces on the flight with me.

One of the biggest problems with traveling is the darn windshields. I'll
probably be traveling with 4 windshields total, two small ones and two mediums.
If they broke down into smaller pieces, transporting them would be so much
easier.

So I am leaning towards this for the field:

https://www.ospreypacks.com/us/en/product/farpoint-70-FARPNT70.html

 And for the flight:

I still need a good space bar system, among other things...

2a. iPhone as recording devices

Has anybody done an analysis of how the current generation of iPhones stack up
against the currently available stand alone products in terms of recording
quality and background noise?

My phone is just so convenient.

Also I once heard a segment on the radio (possibly National Public Radio) where
they simulated extinction by removing instruments of a orchestra. It was
perhaps 20-30 years ago and it had quite a profound impact on me. Does anybody
remember that segment and know where I can find it or something comparable?

Flock on!

There is very little space available in a smartphone for electronics and audio
recording is a very low priority for the product engineers. There is also a
limited amount of battery capacity and barely enough for a day spent powering
the CPU and the display and certainly not enough to provide plug-in power to an
external mic or two.

Plug-in Power at 2.5 volts from the recording device or an inline device
between the mic and the recording device. The better the signal the higher the
signal to noise as there is less signal amplification needed. Another factor is
the quality of the pre-amps that take the mic signal and amplify it so it can
be recorded into the device. It is remarkable what can be done with a $100
portable sound recorder, but it is a dedicated piece of gear that is powered by
AA batteries and in a form that has more than double the interior volume to
work with as a smartphone.

Better to decide which portable sound recorder with XY mics is the "best" or
least bad for what you wish to record and take it and some spare AA batteries.
The portable sound records can be very small, like the Nagra Mezzo and the very
inexpensive Tascam DR-05 and Zoom H1. These also provide plug-in power through
the 3.5mm phone jack for other mics.

I think Christine Hass has a feature in her 'Wild Mountain Echoes ' on this.

Hi Dan, Thanks for the reply. Not sure what your mean by clothespin style
clamps? Got a link for you clamp of choice?

 Thanks,

 Jason

I’ve used the Atlas Sound LO-2B quick releases on all my stands & mics in my
pro studio for at least 35 years, & never had issues. It appears the On Stage
device is a clone of the Atlas, so you may not like this option. However On
Stage makes generally cheaper, crappier versions of everything that others do
better. The stuff from the film industry, whilst looking very hardy, also looks
needlessly expensive, given the task.
