Yes, one must pay for low self-noise because it requires much better engine=
ering to get there.
A cheap way to get started is to build a boundary array with some Primo EM1=
72 capsules. Check Vicki Powys' posts here for that, e.g.:http://www.capert=
eebirder.com/index.php?p=3D1_31_recording-gear-4

You will find the imaging of her mic array to be quite delightful.
Also please check Tom Benedict's excellent post from March 7 on this group =
(scan your emails or check the archives of this group =A0;>}). He also has =
some URLs where you cab hear the difference between various kinds of mic se=
tups.=A0

One big advantage of using any of these inexpensive capsules is that they c=
an be powered by the built-in PIP of your R-05 by just wiring the capsules =
to the 3.5 mm stereo plug. There is a menu in the R-05 to turn on PIP [pug-=
in-power]. Works great!
You also get great performance and light weight, with little money spent. B=
ut you need to do a small bit 'sweat equity' to build up your mic array. It=
's not difficult, plus it is very rewarding. I have about 6 different versi=
ons of various mics that work on PIP, so that I can record with either my R=
-05 or my PCM-M10.=A0
Another possibility is that one can sometimes find Shure MX391/o omni bound=
ary mics very cheaply (<$50.0) on eBay. These mics are nicely built, are du=
rable and have reasonably low noise, except for extremely quiet areas. You =
can attach them to various kinds of boundaries or mounts, or just attach th=
en to opposite sides of a tree. I believe that Dan Dugan uses the lavaliere=
version of these mics in various ways, including attaching them on his lap=
els when recording.=A0
Anyway, the MX391/O mics terminate into a mini 4-pin connector [TA4F]. So, =
one can make a simple adapter box that includes two 4-pin male mini connect=
ors [TB4M] to a stereo 3.5 mm jack (or hard-wire the cable-ready TA4M 4-pin=
connectors to a length of stereo mic cable terminated in a 3.5mm stereo pl=
ug). Then that plugs into your R-05 and you're set to go. I use two of the =
MX391/o mics for my Locusonus live stream and they are outside the north wa=
ll of my home running 24/7. =A0http://locusonus.org/soundmap/051/
Zoom in on the map and click on the mic at the southern tip of Lake Michiga=
n to listen: gary - gmo dunes1 is my streaming site.
A word of caution: NEVER connect any of the mics/capsules that I have descr=
ibed to 48V phantom power! They will be destroyed. Use only PIP from your R=
-05, etc., since that voltage is generally limited to less than 5 volts and=
is current-limited to protect the mics.
There are also folks that sell various types of inexpensive PIP mics world-=
wide, so do a bit of web digging and then you'll find it. But please go to =
the main site for this newsgroup and do some intelligent searching. You wil=
l be surprised at what you will find and then learn. And if you really don'=
t want to build a mic array, I can build one for you. My email is above.
