This is the one magpie, five weeks apart, with his or her song of the
dawn. No doubt it is like the other magpies during the day -
quardle-oodle-ardling with the best of them and studying the wet grass
for worms like an academic - but before or during dawn, we sometime hear
this song, which is unlike anything we hear from magpies during the
day. I haven't noticed any songs like this in the evening, but the
Wikipedia page does refer to such dusk songs:

(The recordings were done with a Sony PCM D-50 and its internal mics. I
should have filtered out some wind noise in the second one.)
