Emil,
I was at a Wildlife Sound Recording Society training course at the weekend =
and there were a number of SQN mixers in evidence, including my 5S. Other m=
embers were using the 4S, and Sound Devices mixers. I=92ve seen Chris Watso=
n using one in the past. Mine was second-hand and is still going strong, as=
are many others that you=92ll see advertised on ebay and bblist, etc. The =
paint may chip off and the edges get a little dented, but they keep on work=
ing.
I have no experience of Sound Devices kit, so I can only go by my impressio=
ns. The SQN mixers are physically bigger than the SD machines. They can use=
re-chargeable AA batteries, but can=92t charge them internally, so a batte=
ry charger is a must. They can use an external power supply to feed them fr=
om the mains supply, and there are adapters to allow running from a couple =
of different types of video camera batteries.
I like the ability to filter out wind noise using the bass-cut switches - t=
he weekend course was held at Burnham Deepdale on the North Norfolk coast a=
nd we were recording on the salt marshes with winds of 18 to 24 mph, with g=
usts up to 31mph. Using the largest diameter Rycote blimps (designed for M/=
S recording) and the bass-cut on the SQN I was able to record the wind very=
well using a pair of DPA 4060s and a M/S set-up (Neumann KM183 and Sennhei=
ser MKH-30), according to the other people there at the time!
It certainly seems to work well with my Nagra Seven.
