A few years ago I was shipping a froglogger that used a LS-7 and it had wea=
ther-proof EM-172 mounted in the sides of a pelican case. I haven't been =
able to do much with frogloggers lately because of health issues. Just got =
out of hospital again a few days ago.

I have some cable strain reliefs that I mount the EM172 inside of with a ge=
nerous amount of epoxy. The only part of the EM172 exposed is the face of =
the capsule with the moisture-proof seal. I'll see if I can find a few and=
send them to ya. Email me off list and give me an address. You also need =
some sealer around the hole where it mounts in the side of the case.

Subject: [Nature Recordists] Weatherproofing Mics?

I would like to build an autonomous, weatherproof recorder using a Pelican =
case, an Olympus LS-7 (because of its timer function) and EM172 capsules. I=
'm imagining somehow mounting the capsules on either side of the case, perh=
aps flush with the sides to get a little bit of a boundary effect. Does any=
one here have experience trying this and having success creating a weatherp=
roof and wind-protected mounting for the capsules? Are you willing to share=
 your experience?

I have been using a Wildlife Acoustics SM3 recorder, and while it is very r=
obust, completely weatherproof, and has a very flexible timer system, it is=
also very noisy, much noisier than I am used to with my homemade EM172-bas=
ed boundary array. It is also fairly expensive, and if I can create somethi=
ng at a lower cost I can deploy several of them simultaneously. But the sel=
f-noise is the main thing.

Thus I am hoping to recreate the EM172 boundary array - or something simila=
r - in a waterproof package using off-the-shelf components. I can figure ou=
t most of it, but I have never figured out how to waterproof an electret ca=
psule. Is it even possible?

Any ideas or leads to online resources would be greatly appreciated.

 Many thanks.
