Salt water help...

Cleaning a unit dropped in water salt or dirty...According to what type
recorder you have the cleanup and refurb are different. If it's a solid state
no moving parts recorder then drop it in a bucket of pure mineral free
distilled water and let it set for a few hours while gently agitating
occasionally. This is because if any of the salt water remain in the recorder
and dry's it will eat away at the internal electronics. The fresh water will
seep the salt away and then put it in front of a fan with air blowing on it for
at least 24 hours then put it in a bag with the silica gel for a few days do
not power on until it has been in the silica . if you power on with any liquid
inside it trash...do the same with the mic..wash the mic do not soak as the
water will get behind the capsule...but lots of air dry with fan...and move the
items around so it catches different air streams...
Pure water will not hurt electronics as long as it is mineral free when it
dry's...do not apply power until your sure it's completely dry thus a few days
in the silica...

If it's a tape recorder...throw it away the salt water will eat at the grease
in the mechanics and the pots and even if you wash all of the fluids out the
rebuild will be very long and painful...you will have to disassemble the
mechanics and relube/grease the whole transport system and I have never had
good luck with that. I have done these types of repairs for 35 years and have
done a lot of saltwater rebuilds both in the military and after many hurricanes
along the east cost

Depower everything, and remove all soldered in or internal/external
batteries, then rinse the recorder thoroughly with distilled water. Place
it into a container with a load of silica gel and wait a week (but pour off
any visible liquid if it accumulates). Reassemble and gingerly power on...

For the mic, it would depend on the capsule type...but for the housing,
electronics and connectors a similar process as above should help.
