New species in your catalog maybe?

I don't know how many of you heard about this on the news in the US, but a =
new species of Leopard Frog has recently been described from, of all places=
, the New York Metropolitan area! So if you have frog recordings from mars=
hlands in this area (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut), you might have rec=
orded the Atlantic Coast Leopard Frog (Lithobates kauffeldi). =0D
 =0D
=0D
The frog is named after Karl Kauffeld, the former curator of the Staten Is=
land Zoo. He is a household name to the herp community for the wonderful b=
ooks he wrote about his adventures hunting snakes all over North America. =
But in 1936, Kauffeld noted that the Leopard Frogs he heard around Staten =
Island sounded different than they "should". Several others noticed as wel=
l, but it took until this week for enough data to be gathered (recorded, mo=
rpholigical and molecular data) to result in its description.=0D
 =0D
=0D
Maybe not that exciting to many, but a new species of frog in the US is a =
big deal. And a new species from one of the most densely populated areas o=
f the US is amazing!=0D

=0D
You can read the description free online, including spectrographs of the c=
allls of the new species and related species from the area -=0D

And if you wish to hear them, cbernz has a recording on Soundcloud - =0D

I suspect there are people here who have recorded this species unknowingly=
in the past. Might be time to go through those old recordings from the No=
rtheast US?=0D

So keep recording. You never what mysteries you might uncover..and where!=
