I was very moved by Sue Bailey's article " Veterans Find Therapy in
Nature". There is a great deal of evidence that everyone benefits from
experiences in nature including veterans suffering Post-traumatic stress
following military action. Many people in confined places such as
imprisonment, long periods of hospitalization and those in inner city
environments, experience nature deficit syndrome.
While recording deep in a marsh in Elk Island National Park, Alberta, I
met a Canadian Forces officer who was being deployed to Afghanistan the
following day. He wisely wanted to store up as much experience of nature
as possible before going into action.
During the last year the Hadley School for the Blind in Winnetka
Illinois has become our biggest customer for a teaching program I have
produced called "Beginners Guide to Bird Songs of North America . **The
Hadley school states that enjoying bird songs helps people reduce
stress, improve cognition and memory, interact with nature, and even
have spiritual experiences. The US government is funding this program
for returning American veterans. The approach is to get veterans off the
couch and into nature and the outdoors again. *
