OK,
I know this isn't a very good recording, but I am trying to figure out
(remember?) what was making this sound.
I was out recording anurans after some heavy rains in the eastern part of
the Chihuahuan Desert in western Texas (north of Brackettville for those wh=
o
know the area).
When I stopped one spot to listen for frogs I heard this noise which I have
heard before at night, but I can't remember what is making it.
Here is a poor quality recording filtered to accentuate the low throaty
calls.

I know it isn't an amphibian since I know the calls of all the local
species. Something about it suggests a bird (Wild Turkey? Greater
Roadrunner?), but I can't rule out a mammal. It sounds a little
"quail-like" but I can't find a recording of a Gambel's or Scaled Quail
making this sound and it seems too low pitched for a quail-sized bird. I'v=
e
listened to deer sounds and can't find a match. Javelina possibly?
Anyone know what it is?
I know it isn't rare or anything but it is driving me crazy not remembering
what makes this sound!!!!
TIA,
Chris Harrison
