Hi Jonathan,=0D
In the number of times I have used the M10/EM172 combination I have not not=
iced any problem with overloading of the preamp. The pre-amps of the M10 a=
re by no means "clean," yet they are cleaner than many of the other pocket-=
sized recorders out there. Neither the M10 nor the EM172 are really good e=
nough for recording quiet environments, though the combo might be good for =
natural environments with wide frequency background ambience like wind, sur=
f, or rushing water that can cover some of the obvious preamp hiss below 10=
k. From Raimund's recorder list you can see the M10 is quietest when run =
at maximum recording level, so finding a microphone that does not cause cli=
pping for most nature settings when run at full gain may be goal in optimiz=
ing performance. I will try to test the combination at full gain tomorrow i=
f I can find a moment.=0D

I would not assume burying capsules down inside a tube will sound good at a=
ll unless you have some information supporting that - though try it and let=
us know what happens.=0D
