Hi Peter,
Under the heading of social differences: <smile>
Do take a roll of toilet paper with you and keep it in your daily kit bag.
I'm not kidding. This was the most useful advice I got before a couple of
trips there, several years ago.
It is very easy, if you're used to western public facilities to forget the
only TP dispenser (which may be empty) is by the main door, or to misjudge
how much you'll need if [you know]... and you can find yourself in a
difficult er, position.
That comment is not indicative of the food, which was wonderful. I'm
jealous. I wish I had been recording when I was there.
Have a great time!

PS: If you need some English (or other non-Chinese language) contact or
assistance in Beijing, http://www.chinabookworm.com/ is a popular hangout
for the ex-pat community. I see they've also expanded to Chengdu and
Suzhou.
Oh, and get yourself some medical evacuation insurance! SOS is inexpensive
and the gold standard as far as I know.
