Greg,

Of course it depends on the type of ground, but over a hard surfsce, I find=

the phase effects at stand height can be quite audible. Path length
differences at about a metre are in the lower hundred Hertz.

I made the ground position discovery many years ago on a BBC drama shoot.
This was before multiple radio mics were useable and sync dialogue was
required on a wide angle shot. I tried lying a 415 in a windgag on grass an=
d
disguised it with more grass close to the artistes and it sounded fine.

I'm not saying ground level always works, but to try it. Wind is often less=

of a problem near the ground. Simply, if it doesn't work, use a tripod, but=

my standard rig for mics in my woodland is in a small tent for rain
protection.
