> I use Apogee mini mp microphone preamp with MS matrix circuit in the ana=
log domain. When I put the circuit in the path with mkh 40 as mid and mkh 3=
0 as side I fell some loss in the signal, and I feel I am losing some trans=
parency. Is it normal? Is it not better to record in stereo the two channel=
s without the MS matrix and make the Ms after recording, in the daw?
Jos=C3=A9,
Your headphones will be most likely L-R and will not give you a stereo imag=
e
from a M-S signal, so you can't compare them. M-S will always sound odd.
The final result will be a conventional stereo signal which is L-R, so at
some stage, using an M-S mic rig, you will have to convert.
Once recorded, you can turn M-S into L-R or the other way around with a lin=
e
level matrix, or a good sound editor if you have either. Quality wise, it
makes no difference as long as you listen to the L-R version.
Your best decision depends on what post-recording processing you want to do=
.
If you have a mixdown mixer with M-S controls, you can record M-S, if not,=
then record L-R which you can post-adjust with a simple sound editing
programme.
