My 2 cents worth: There are many factors that go into which recorder to bu=
y. In the end I find that I have need for both a good quality portable reco=
rder with a 3.5mm mic input (the PCM-M10 seems to be the best of the bunch =
right now) and a high quality recorder that is rugged and has excellent pre=
amps with XLR and P48 power (like the Marantz PMD661 or the SD line for the=
well-heeled).=0D

With a limited budget, I would start with the PCM-M10 and then save money f=
or a really good recorder with XLR. The DR-100mkii is good enough for a sen=
sitive mic like the ME66, but it is too noisy for quieter or less sensitive=
mics, like the AT4022 or even the Rode NT4. It might be good enough for no=
w but will it grow with you?=0D

To my way of thinking, the PCM-M10 offers greater flexibility as a starter =
recorder. For a portable recorder it has very quiet preamps which will comp=
lement almost any microphone. If you really need xlr and P48 (like for the =
AT4022), and can't yet afford a Marantz or Sound Devices, you can still get=
a small P48 power supply like the Rolls or the ART for under US$100. That'=
s where I'm at right now. Saving my pennies for that high-end recorder.=0D

Definitely, buy the best you can now. Wait and save if you have to. Don't w=
aste money (and Earth's resources) on a recorder that won't still be useful=
to you 4 or 5 or even 10 years from now. That's how I see it.=0D
