Jos=E9,
It is not clipping in the conventional sense but there is distortion at
frequencies around 5KHz. This sounds like enharmonic or intermodulation
distortion.
Listening carefully and looping, the bird is on the right, but the
distortion products are mid position. This would suggest that the distortio=
n
is not from the left and right preamps but in a common circuit, and the
suspicion falls on the phantom supply.
MKH mics can output large signals without overloading, often over 0dB, and=
may simply be inputting beyond the spec of the Marantz.
Try a similar recording as a line input if the Marantz will supply phantom=
power to line. The level will be low but even on 16 bit sampling you should=
be able to bring the level up OK.
It is possible to put an attenuator, say -20dB, in a phantom power circuit.=
The other solution to try would be to put a resistor across each input to
match the low MKH output impedance so that it was not running into 4KOhms o=
r
whatever.
Nice recording. Different from our Troglodytes.
