Chris,

Software like GetDataBack cannot retrieve information from overwritten file=
s, but it can recover deleted files, and even formatted HD data (if not sto=
red in the desktop).

I also lost some non-replaceable data a few years ago, but mine was through
stupidity in the backup process rather than hard drive failure. In doing m=
y
weekly backup to my external hard drive, I accidently copied up my older
back up over my original (current) drive, effectively overwriting everythin=
g
new since the last back up. I lost hundreds of irreplaceable photographs.

I am a big proponent of online backup. It is relatively cheap, easy, and
you have the confidence of knowing that all of your data exists somewhere
else in case of flood, fire, or some other catastrophic event that could
destroy all your copies. I have used Mozy and Carbonite, but there are
other choices available.

Now they have apps for the phone and tablets which allow you to access your
data remotely as well. Great piece of mind. It does take a long time
(months for me) to get the original data backed up, but I know it is
somewhere safe.
