Hi All

Decided an early rise to do a clock test on the above recorders for a couple of
reasons.
Back on the 8-1-13 Peter made this remark regarding Sony D50, I think referring
to the internal mics.

"I always use the low gain (-20db) setting and then won't push the gain over 6,
possibly 6.5. over that it will introduce pretty horrible noise.
and the white noise,"

I was aware of this with Olympus recorders but not the Sony. Recording on the
higher gain setting except in extremely high noise settings , I was interested
to test this out however it was with external mics. Will have to try a test
with the internal mics another time.

The second test was a Fostex FR 2le. I recently bought one 2nd hand and just
updated the firmware to 1.30. This firmware allows a 12dB boost in recording.
Not sure to the trim or volume settings. It is uncertain if this boost also
adds noise.

Test. Both with made with DIY SASS, but they are slightly different to each
other.

Sony with a pair of Telinga EM23. The volume for both recording were set at 5.
Fostex with a pair of AT 4022. Trim at 1:30, Recording 3:00 (note no marks on
these nobs, what a pain).

I' m far from an expert but from listening and looking at the spectrogram there
was no difference in the high or low gain settings in the Sony nor with the
12dB boost in the the Fostex.
There was a slight difference between the two units with the Fostex with AT
4022 being slightly quieter than the Sony with Telinga EM23. This was for very
quiet situations but with a very quick comparison in the field, very difficult.

Those interested can hear the samples but not certain the best way to post them.

Cheers
David.
