I'm not sure how many people were aware of this, but you can download Adobe
Audition 3 for free from the Adobe Website. I know it is older software,
but would still probably work for many folks and might be a good
introduction to whether you might want the newer version yourself.

I use Audacity, but will certainly give this Audition 3 a tryout since the
price is right.
