<<With tape recording, overload distortion is more acceptable as the last few dBs get "compressed" in the tape head recording process>> One of the dirty little secrets in the classical music recording world is that it was discovered, with the advent of truly linear dynamic response in digital systems, that there is some degree of compression at ALL levels with analog tape. A classical engineer would never admit to using compression on classical recordings, but the truth is that every analog recording ever made incorporates a couple dB of subtle compression, even at levels well below the point of audible saturation.
