Agreed one that sounds good to your ears is a good recording for YOU.
Must evaluate the target audience/use of the recording to answer the genera=
l question.

So let's stop semantics and get specific. I'm pretty new here so please hel=
p me out if I miss anything. Most of my experience in "nature recording" is=
for TV & video. Just FYI on my personal BG. I don't have any real professi=
onal experience with research related recordings. So my input on that is li=
mited by my imagination.

Let's start with a list of general uses of nature recordings and then break=
 things down from there.

Recordings simply for the pleasure of listening

Research/Scientific Study

Film/Video/Television

Please add to my short list here if you've any more categories to add. I'm =
sure we could have a lengthy essay on each but let's just share some ideas.

Recordings for listening pleasure: For me, I prefer surround. But stereo is=
also nice. Mono not so much for me in this category at least as a final pr=
oduct. I like to be taken away somewhere. I want to hear low lows, rich mid=
s, and crisp highs. It doesn't need to be clinically accurate, just believa=
ble. I heard a recording someone did somewhere where they had a stereo pair=
space something like 100' apart and it was a very fun listen. For that you=
need a subject loud enough to be heard across that range. I'd love to try =
a four channel version of that. In this scenario you can choose to be a pur=
ist and the final can be what was recorded as it was recorded or you can mi=
x in multiple recordings.

I'll stop here cause I need to go right now. Not enough time at this point =
to get it down.
