I had three US Patents, now expired. The term changed in 1995 to harmonize =
with Europe. A 1987 patent would have had a term of 17 years from the grant=
ing date, and would have expired in 2004. Expired patents are public domain=
.

More recent patents have a term of 20 years from the date of application, w=
hich works out to about the same. Details:
