David,

In SASS the mics are more or less at right angles to one another,  
with a fixed spacing for the front ends of the mics (i.e. ear-spacing).

If the mics were mounted parallel to one another (side by side), then  
this would be a completely different sort of rig, not SASS, and  
probably would not sound as spacious as SASS.
